Now that Sonic's story is complete, we're now moving on to Tails' story. Rather than the levels' objectives being just about running, Tails has to race Sonic and Dr. Eggman/Robotnik to get to the goal and/or Chaos Emerald first in each stage. Tails is testing out a new prototype plane using one of the seven Chaos Emeralds to power it up, but a sudden malfunction occurs that causes him to crash down on one of Emerald Coast's beaches. Luckily, Sonic came to Tails' rescue quick since he noticed a silhouette falling from the sky down towards Station Square. Sonic offers Tails to borrow the Tornado for usage in missions and power supply testing, so Tails decides that they need to head to his workshop in the Mystic Ruins to power up the Tornado. When Sonic and Tails arrive at the Mystic Ruins, Dr. Eggman/Robotnik shows up with a new invention called the Egg Hornet. Tails is able to defeat Eggman/Robotnik with ease, but Eggman/Robotnik notices that Tails is carrying one of the Emeralds in his hands, so he steals it from him and feeds it to Chaos in order to up its strength that will eventually make it invincible. Sonic and Tails agree that they need to collect as many Chaos Emeralds as they can before Chaos reaches its final stage that could be catastrophic to the whole world. Tails finds a wind stone on his workshop's doorstep, so he takes it to an active wind cavity within the mountains of the Mystic Ruins so he can access an area that has one of the seven Emeralds.
